AfterClopay Roller Replacement: The Conroe Owner’s Guide
We replace Clopay garage door rollers in Conroe for $110 to $220 installed, and we carry the common sizes on the truck so most jobs are done the same day you call. Which Clopay Models This Applies To
We work on the full Clopay lineup that’s common in Conroe garages: the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, and Reserve collections, plus the older Intellicore and Ideal series doors that are still running around Montgomery County. Clopay uses two roller diameters on residential doors: 2-inch rollers for standard 2-inch tracks, and 1-inch rollers on some older Compact series doors from the 1990s. You can check yours by looking at the roller head where it meets the track, or find the door’s data tag on the inside of a side section near the bottom. If the tag’s faded, measure the roller head with a tape; 2 inches is what you want to see on almost any Clopay built after about 1995.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Clopay doesn’t actually make its own rollers. Their doors ship with a decent nylon roller, and a good aftermarket brand like Dura-Lift or Houston-based National is often an upgrade, not a compromise. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Clopay, and we’ll tell you straight which roller belongs on your specific door. The nylon-bearing rollers hold up better in Conroe humidity than the cheap steel ones, and the 10-ball bearing version costs a few dollars more and glides noticeably smoother. Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Grinding or squealing while the door moves – this is a bearing that’s run dry and started to chew itself. The roller’s still round, but the wheel isn’t turning; it’s scraping the track. Left alone, it carves a flat spot into the roll.
- Door shudders or hops on one side – the roller has flat-spotted or the shaft is loose inside the hinge. The door’s still opening, but it’s transferring all that stress into the track and the opener rail.
- Visible wear or chipping on the nylon wheel – Conroe heat soaks garages, and nylon embrittles after a decade or so in a hot enclosure. You’ll see hairline cracks, then chunks. That’s the one that fails without any warning sound first.
- Door sits slightly tilted or the gap at one corner is wider – when a roller on one side collapses or seizes, the door shifts. The other rollers start wearing unevenly, and the cable tension goes wrong on one side.
- Metal-on-metal scraping sound – the roller’s outer nylon shell is gone, and you’re dragging bearing housing against the track. If you hear this, don’t run the door again until someone looks at it.

You can safely inspect a Clopay roller on a standard residential door. Look at each roller head, spin it by hand with the door closed, and listen for grinding. Replacing the top and bottom rollers on your own, though, is where I slow you down. The bottom roller brackets carry cable tension, and on a torsion-spring door, removing a bottom bracket without releasing the spring properly can bite you hard. We get calls from Conroe homeowners who pulled a bottom bracket loose and watched the cable whip.
